Here I’m Back with another interview, this time I had a chance to interview fromer Hyper Island student Nidia Dias from Portugal. Currently working at Mainframe , UK ! Earlier she went to ESAP (Escola Superior Artística do Porto) to study Design and Multimedia Communication course in Portugal.
And here from I shall be asking her certain questions pertaining to her work & the industry that she is passionate about.
Where did you grow up? Has that influenced you as a designer?
I grew up in the north of Portugal, in Porto, and even if I love that city, I wouldn’t see it as something that influenced me as a designer. Porto is just something that is part of me, if that makes any sense =)
How did you get into your first job in the industry?
As part of the course I took in sweden, we had a 3 month internship, and my internship was done at mainframe in London, and at the end of my internship I was lucky to have them offer me a job.
Tell us a bit what is the best thing about studying at Hyper Island?
Well first of all it was an amazing experience, the way the school works is diferent from many others, and that makes it amazing. The best thing of studying at Hyper for me was the networking, and also it made me grow so much as a person!
How would you describe your style?
I still don’t know If I have a style, to be honest. But I really like abstract, geometric, clean and minimalistic style, oh and I love typography, so I guess I always tend to do a mixture of this things.
What software/Plugins do you use?
My main tool is still Photoshop, even if for the last year I’ve been working as motion designer. Other than that illustrator, after effects and cinema 4d.
Are there any plugins you would recommend?
Trapcode Particular, knoll unmult, re:vision rsmb .
How do you keep your ideas staying fresh? & where do you go for daily inspiration?
Hum I guess my ideas come from life situations, especially when I’m listening to music, depending on my mood. I love the dichotomy of shadow/light, and I’m always interested on how light reacts, and how shadows behave.. so pretty much walking around listening to music gives me loads of inspiration. But keep them fresh is also more to do with trying to make it something that its still your style but something thats kind of what in at the moment.
For inspiration I spend a lot of time in blogs! and now with pinterest I spend hours and hours there!
What’s the best part about being you and living a creative life?
I dont think theres nothing awesome about me.. Im an average 23 year old girl, but the best thing of living a creative life, is that you are constatly doing diferent stuff, what i mean is that you don’t have a boring job from 9-5 always doing the same mechanical thing.
Out of all the projects you have done, which one is your favorite and why?
I would say the Mtv swatch playground, one of the reasons was because was my first real project for a well known company, and also because was a project that I started from the idea to the end result, and was that kind of project where you had a lot of input, and the client would listen to you.
Do you have any tips/advice for newcomers in this industry?
I’m still a newcomer in this industry, but I would say that you don’t need to think you need to know every single thing.. because you don’t, in our area there’s always new things coming out and what you really need to show is that you are willing to learn, and always do your best =)
Anyone you’d like to give thanks or show appreciation to?
My family! they have always supported me, and always told me to follow my dreams.. thats how I got where I am now =)
Thank You Nidia for your time, wishing you Good Luck for your upcoming projects !!!
